The beautiful sandy beach is very shallow, you can go out very far, until it is knee-deep. The water warms up very quickly and is ideal for toddlers. Not suitable for swimmers.

In just under 100 years, the dynamics of the Baltic Sea have created the approximately 2.5 km long Grüner Brink

on the north coast of Fehmarn, three kilometers west of Puttgarden.

A landscape that is still subject to constant change today. Floods and ocean currents continue to shape the coast. No day at Grüner Brink is the same as the previous one.

The 134-hectare nature reserve is characterized by three beach lakes, which were created by the construction of a state protection dike in 1872. The dike, built after a flood disaster, changed the flow patterns. Sand and gravel accumulating on the water caused spit ridges to grow. Their tips grew inland, successively sealing off three shallow beach lakes from the open Baltic Sea. Later, enclosed, slowly silting inland lakes emerged. Only during periods of heavy flooding does salty Baltic Sea water still flow into the small beach lakes. The nature reserve is a habitat for waterfowl. The signature bird of the Grüner Brink is therefore the red-necked grebe. The diverse structures of the area's coastal lake landscape also provide a habitat for a remarkable number of other bird species. A wide variety of geese and ducks live on the water, including mergansers, whose saw-like beak edges are particularly good at holding fish. Terns hover and gulls cry out above the water. Large and small wading birds (limicola) poke around for food in the mudflats. Numerous migratory birds from Scandinavia can be found in the nearby forest in the autumn. A total of up to 170 bird species use the habitats of the Grüner Brink. The area, declared a nature reserve in 1938, is well-developed. The trails offer numerous opportunities to observe the local birdlife. Binoculars and a camera should therefore always be taken with you. The best starting point for a walk is the parking lot at the Grüner Brink beach, about 3 kilometers west of the Puttgarden ferry port. From there, walk over the dike and along the beach to the Niobe Monument. During the summer months, a NABU (Nature Conservation Union) nature conservation officer oversees the Grüner Brink, who also offers guided tours.
