Tidal beach with pebbles that falls dry at low tide and looks like a cute perfect half-circle at high tide; but it is near the dangerous tidal Alderney Race current (in French: Raz Blanchard) that can run up to about 12 knots (22 km/h). The power of the current comes from the narrowness of the strait and from the fact that there is a two-metre tidal height difference between Carteret and La Hague as well as between la Hague and Cherbourg. For a long time, the little harbor of Goury was a beacon for fishermen who had become caught up in a storm in the dangerous raz Blanchard, with sometimes 12 knots one of the strongest sea currents in the world. In Goury there is still an important rescue station. In the octagonal building, the lifeboat stands on a rotating platform, so that it can be launched in two directions: at high tide in the direction of the harbor and at low tide in the direction of the open sea. At the exit of the building is a semaphore from 1860, which was sometimes used by the French navy until recently.
