The Old Crematorium, built in 1909 by architect Fritz Schumacher, was one of the most modern in Europe and promoted the acceptance of cremation in Saxony. It is an impressive example of Art Nouveau architecture with a sandstone structure and numerous floral ornaments, coats of arms and reliefs.

"In Saxony, cremation was only permitted by law in 1906. Shortly thereafter, the construction of a crematorium was also decided in Dresden. [...] In 1909 the construction of the crematorium began. The plans came from Fritz Schumacher, the construction manager held Hans Erlwein [...] The first cremation took place on May 22, 1911.

Fritz Schumacher designed the open urn hall and the urn courtyard with its fountain of tears. The urn grove was designed by the architects Willy Meyer and Fritz Schumacher. At that time, the Tolkewitz urn grove was the “first complete facility for cremations in Germany.” Nature and cemetery design form a symbiosis [...]

The new crematorium was put into operation in 2005.

Personally, I find two things particularly noteworthy about the place.
On the one hand, the unmistakable style of the buildings by Hans Erlwein, which strongly influenced the cityscape at the turn of the century. Think of the monumental Erlwein warehouse, the trade fair building (formerly a slaughterhouse) or the savings bank on Sachsenplatz.
On the other hand, this reminiscence of Böcklin's wonderful painting, for which Sergej Rachmaninov (also a Dresden resident for a while) contributed the appropriate soundtrack.
