Hamburg's new, not uncontroversial landmark is an expression of the city competition that has gripped many metropolises since the 1990s. Around the turn of the century it was clear that the old landmarks like the Michel were no longer of much use in this 21st century competition because they were too old. That's why the city spent a lot of money to set a new example: in the end, it ended up being 789 million from the city budget.

The Elbphilharmonie is the new cultural landmark of Hamburg. Between the brick base and the glass structure, at 37 meters, there is a public space that serves as the access level for the foyer of the concert halls and the hotel. From there you have an interesting view of the harbor and Speicherstadt.
In the eastern part of the 6th to the 20th floor of the building is the four-star plus hotel "The Westin Hamburg" with 244 rooms.
Apart from the Störtebeker gastronomy there are further gastronomic offers in the hotel and in the concert area of the Elbphilharmonie.
In addition to the cultural use of the concert halls and the music education sector, there are 45 high-end residential units in the building, which are among the most expensive in the city with purchase prices of up to 10 million euros.

The large concert hall with almost 2,100 seats is the heart of the Elbphilharmonie. The audience levels are arranged around the podium like vineyard terraces, with the orchestra and conductor in the middle of the hall. The tiers are interwoven and form a steep spectator bowl that offers all visitors the best view. The reflector on the tapered hall ceiling is also architecturally impressive. It provides the outstanding acoustics and at the same time houses part of the lighting and stage technology. The acoustic concept was developed by one of the world's best acousticians, Yasuhisa Toyota from Nagata Acuostics, and tested using a detailed 1:10 scale hall model.
