Gungoldinger juniper heath

The Gungoldinger juniper heath is a 72-acre nature reserve on the northern slope of the Altmühltal in the district of Eichstätt. It is thus the largest in Bavaria as a nature reserve designated Juniper heath. It was created by deforestation in the Middle Ages and was put under protection in 1959. Wild roses, sloes and hawthorn grow on the dry grass next to juniper bushes. In the rocky regions, a steppe heath has developed between limestone cliffs. In the Gungoldinger juniper heath grow various orchids and other rare plants such as the Felselfelke, the Spitzblättrige Miere, the bald-headed Heideröschen, the Pasque, the spring, Gefranste and the German gentian. The heath is a habitat for endangered butterfly species, including the Sailfish and Mountain Witch. For the preservation of the heather adapted to strong sunlight and drought sheep grazing is operated to push back bushes and forest.
