After the fall of Henry the Lion, the Welfs lost the end of the 12th century, the disposal of the Elbe crossing Artlenburg and trade routes Bardowicks. Bleckede was therefore founded in 1209 as a city by Duke William of Brunswick and Lüneburg as a new trading center under the name Löwenstadt / Lowenstat on the Elbe. The name chosen in memory of Henry the Lion did not prevail. The place name Bleckede is probably due to the old Germanic "Blek-ithi", blek and -ithi here mean bright, free, bright spot, and originated from the former German and Wendish settlement Bleketsa and Slavicum Bleckede

In terms of culture, Bleckede has acquired an excellent cultural reputation, on the one hand, through the annual concert of the Meckelnburg-Vorpommern Festival and, on the other hand, through the numerous high-ranking activities of the "Kultur- und Heimatkreises Bleckede und Umgebung e.V."

The city of Bleckede itself offers basic services for residents and guests in a historical atmosphere, among other things. with pharmacy, optician, bookstore, housewares, clothing, handicrafts, groceries, banks, doctors and nurseries and much more.
