The top of the hill was originally used as a quarry in the Middle Ages. The stones were used for the collegiate church and the Old Castle in Stuttgart, as well as the Ulm Minster, among other things. You can still see the crater of the former quarry today - it now houses a playground.

Originally called Reinburghügel and was then named in 1889 after the Württemberg King Karl. At the top was since the Middle Ages a quarry in which there is now a playground. The summer house of Julie Siegle, wife of industrialist Gustav Siegle, to whom Karlshöhe belonged at the time, was originally built on the site of the beer garden. Destroyed during the war, it was demolished in 1961 and replaced by the existing terrace with entertainment. In 1901 there were plans to build a huge church on Karlshöhe, similar to the Sacre Cœur in Paris. A little further down the Jean-Amery-Weg is the Athene fountain, built by Julie Siegle in 1911 on her property. It has been restored and functional since 2011. In winter you can go sledging here.
