    Few huts are as exposed as the Payerhütte am Tabarettakamm at 3,029m altitude. It is particularly popular among mountaineers who want to climb the Ortler on the normal route.

        If the hut is very full, the places in the small guest room are far from sufficient.

              The Julius von Payer Hut is the starting point for climbing the Ortler via the normal route. The ascent is also worthwhile as a day hike, because the view from the terrace of the airy hut on the Tabarettakamm at an altitude of over 3,000m to the summit of König Ortler is breathtaking.

                  The Payer Refuge (Payerhütte or Julius-Payer-Hütte) is an alpine refuge located on the Ortles-Cevedale group, in the southern Rhaetian Alps. It rises at 3,029 m on the rocky crest of the Tabaretta, dominating the valleys of Trafoi and Solda. The panorama extends from Val Mustair to the upper Val Venosta. It is an important and strategic point of support for the popular normal route to Ortles. It also builds a rewarding destination for the hiker, who can enjoy an incomparable panorama from here.

                  The refuge, named after the famous cartographer and polar explorer Julius Payer, was built in 1875 by the Prague section of the then DOeAV. At first it was a simple hut that could accommodate up to 30 people. Just a year after the opening, the first annex was built. In 1885 the refuge was considerably enlarged thanks to the construction of an upper floor. Two years later the management began and in the year 1895 it exceeded 1000 visitors for the first time. Rising figures made another extension indispensable. In 1909 a 3-storey building was built which housed 21 rooms with 48 beds, warehouse, pantry, guide rooms, breakfast room and coffee corner. During the First World War the refuge was occupied by the military and served as a rear station for the occupying troops on the top of the Ortles. After the First World War the refuge came into the possession of the Italian state and its management was entrusted to the Milanese section of the CAI. Administrative management that lasted until 2010. In 1947 a fire, probably caused by lightning, destroyed the old building; that of 1909 remained, which was consequently reorganized. Major renovations were carried out from 1990 to 1994. Since 1999 the property has been owned by the Autonomous Province of Bolzano.
