The Basilica of San Francesco is a masterpiece of human creative genius, both from an architectural and artistic point of view. The basilica is made up of two superimposed churches (the lower and the upper), as well as a crypt excavated in 1818. The tomb of the Saint is preserved here, a simple sarcophagus resting on the bare rock. Cimabue, Giotto, the Lorenzetti Brothers, Simone Martini: the greatest artists of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries frescoed the walls and ceilings of the basilica.

I believe the Basilica is one of the most beautiful architectural works, rich in history and culture. Inside it is possible to better understand its majesty using the audiovisuals.

The Basilica of San Francesco, which did not exist during the lifetime of Saint Francis of Assisi (1181/82 to 1226), is nevertheless one of the great "original shrines" of the Franciscan religious family, and a "must" for every Assisi resident. Visitors. As the church of the order's founder, it is of course very important spiritually - which is expressed, among other things, by the rare title of "Basilica major" (papal basilica); but then also in terms of art history, especially because of the great frescoes in the lower and upper churches (in the latter in particular the cycle with 28 pictures from the life of Saint Francis by Giotto Bondone). This important place of worship is therefore quite rightly on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Saint Francis (canonized in 1228, just two years after his death) became a role model for many people, they joined him, and the "Order of the Friars Minor" (Ordo Fratrum Minorum) of Francis of Assisi was created. Today there are three male branches in the broad Franciscan religious family: the Franciscans, the Minorites and the Capuchins; as well as two female ones: the Franciscan Sisters and the Poor Clares. In addition, there is the “Third” or “Secular” Order, which can be joined by women and men who do not take the classic religious vows (poverty, chastity and obedience) and continue to live in their family and their profession.

In more touristic periods, like August, you have to wait a bit to get in. Giotto's frescoes are a marvel, but to better understand their meaning, I recommend purchasing the brochure which costs very little.

The foundation stone was laid on July 17, 1228 by Pope Gregory IX.
The change in architectural style from Romanesque to Gothic is documented in the Basilica of San Francesco.
The entire complex was redesigned and expanded in the 15th century (1472–1474) by Pope Sixtus IV, who emerged from the Franciscan order.

"The Basilica of San Francesco is the church of the Holy Sepulcher of St. Francis. The foundation stone was laid in 1228 and the consecration took place in 1253. San Francesco consists of two churches built one above the other: the upper one is of a bright and soaring shape. The famous frescoes unfold on its walls, which are attributed to Giotto and depict the life of Francis... a staircase leads down to the tomb of Francis. The unadorned stone sarcophagus is visible above the altar of this ascetically designed underground chapel... which expresses both solemnity and Franciscan simplicity."

Fascinating church building built like an onion. The impressive crypt with the grave of Franz von Assisis is covered by a Romanesque church, over which a Gothic cathedral is built.

The Papal Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi (Italian: Basilica Papale di San Francesco, Latin: Basilica Sancti Francisci Assisiensis) is the mother church of the Roman Catholic Order of Friars Minor—commonly known as the Franciscan Order—in Assisi, a town of Umbria region in central Italy, where St. Francis was born and died. The basilica is one of the most important places of Christian pilgrimage in Italy. With its accompanying friary, Sacro Convento, the basilica is a distinctive landmark to those approaching Assisi. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.
The basilica, which was begun in 1228, is built into the side of a hill and comprises two churches known as the Upper Church and the Lower Church, and a crypt where the remains of the saint are interred. The interior of the Upper Church is an important early example of the Gothic style in Italy. The Upper and Lower Churches are decorated with frescoes by numerous late medieval painters from the Roman and Tuscan schools, and include works by Cimabue, Giotto, Simone Martini, Pietro Lorenzetti and possibly Pietro Cavallini. The range and quality of the works gives the basilica a unique importance in demonstrating the development of Italian art of this period.

At the end of the short tour we are a little above the basilica with a worthwhile view. The Santa Margherita Church is also located here. I find this winding path a little haunted at this point.

It is the tomb of St. Francis of Assisi. As a basilica maior, it has been one of the seven highest-ranking catholic churches since 1756.
The basilica is decorated in the upper and lower church with important paintings of the Renaissance, including the Giotto di Bondone. It was severely damaged in an earthquake on 26 September 1997 and restored with enormous effort.

Despite the beauty and grace of many Italian churches and monasteries, this pilgrimage church is an absolute highlight.
This basilica is definitely worth visiting. The upper and lower churches are both beautiful and feature paintings by Giotto. Many frescoes adorn the walls and the wooden benches invite you to pause.
Due to the large number of tourists, it's not a place of peace, but you still have to experience this place.

In the crypt there is the grave of Francis, as well as other confreres from his time. Both churches above are rich in pictures of the life of Francis and other religious murals. Whether this basilica, which was built soon after the death of Francis, lived up to his idea of simplicity, was already controversial at the time. Some of the brothers are in the original center of the community at the Portiuncula chapel, which was special to Francis and where he eventually died.
