The Basilica of San Francesco is a masterpiece of human creative genius, both from an architectural and artistic point of view. The basilica is made up of two superimposed churches (the lower and the upper), as well as a crypt excavated in 1818. The tomb of the Saint is preserved here, a simple sarcophagus resting on the bare rock. Cimabue, Giotto, the Lorenzetti Brothers, Simone Martini: the greatest artists of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries frescoed the walls and ceilings of the basilica.

The Basilica of San Francesco, which did not exist during the lifetime of Saint Francis of Assisi (1181/82 to 1226), is nevertheless one of the great "original shrines" of the Franciscan religious family, and a "must" for every Assisi resident. In more touristic periods, like August, you have to wait a bit to get in. Giotto's frescoes are a marvel, but to better understand their meaning, I recommend purchasing the brochure which costs very little.

The Papal Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi (Italian: Basilica Papale di San Francesco, Latin: Basilica Sancti Francisci Assisiensis) is the mother church of the Roman Catholic Order of Friars Minor—commonly known as the Franciscan Order—in Assisi, a town of Umbria region in central Italy, where St. Francis was born and died. The basilica is one of the most important places of Christian pilgrimage in Italy. With its accompanying friary, Sacro Convento, the basilica is a distinctive landmark to those approaching Assisi. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.
The basilica, which was begun in 1228, is built into the side of a hill and comprises two churches known as the Upper Church and the Lower Church, and a crypt where the remains of the saint are interred. The interior of the Upper Church is an important early example of the Gothic style in Italy. The Upper and Lower Churches are decorated with frescoes by numerous late medieval painters from the Roman and Tuscan schools, and include works by Cimabue, Giotto, Simone Martini, Pietro Lorenzetti and possibly Pietro Cavallini. The range and quality of the works gives the basilica a unique importance in demonstrating the development of Italian art of this period.

At the end of the short tour we are a little above the basilica with a worthwhile view. The Santa Margherita Church is also located here. I find this winding path a little haunted at this point.

Despite the beauty and grace of many Italian churches and monasteries, this pilgrimage church is an absolute highlight.
This basilica is definitely worth visiting. The upper and lower churches are both beautiful and feature paintings by Giotto. Many frescoes adorn the walls and the wooden benches invite you to pause.
Due to the large number of tourists, it's not a place of peace, but you still have to experience this place.
