The Erlenbruch nature reserve and the neighboring Schloßwiesen are a popular local recreation area for tourists and the local population. It is a historical cultural landscape strongly influenced by humans: instead of the forest, the Rheda bleaching meadows were in front of the castle in the late Middle Ages. In the meadows surrounded by small ditches, the women spread out their laundry to be bleached in the sun. Under the influence of light, the fabrics took on a “white” appearance. After the bleaching industry declined, the meadows were planted with poplars and alders. Due to the damming of the Ems at the historic weir system at the castle, the alder forest and the castle meadows almost always have a high groundwater level. Adapted to this, many rare and endangered plant species occur, such as the miracle sedge and the water feather.
