The Finnish National Theater was founded on October 13, 1872 in Pori. It is the oldest theater with performances in Finnish. Until 1902 it was called the Finnish Theater and the premises were located near the current Parliament building in Helsinki; only then was it run as a national theater.

The building that houses the Finnish National Theater was built in 1902 by the architect Onni Tarjanne in Art Nouveau style and was enlarged several times. The large stage has 885 seats. At the back of the representative building there is a small stage with 309 seats in a new cuboid building from 1954. In 1976, a small “Willensauna” stage was added, which offers space for 152 visitors. The small “Omapohja” stage with variable seating for up to 78 people has been located in a neighboring house since 1987.

A short detour to the Finnish National Theatre is worthwhile. The red roof and the two red-roofed corner towers give the theatre a powerful presence.
A statue of Aleksis Kivi, Finland's award-winning author, has stood in front of the theatre since 1939. Väinö Aaltonen designed the statue, which is surrounded by flowerbeds in summer.
