The rabbit hole is a hall cave in which extensive material from the Paleolithic was found. The rabbit hole was therefore a station for Stone Age hunters in the Ice Age. Bones found in the cave prove that mammoths, cave lions, cave bears and rhinos lived in the area and were also hunted by humans.
There is also a legend told by the Pottenstein residents. Everyone has to decide for themselves whether it corresponds to the truth. But old legends usually have an origin .....
Some Pottenstein boys skipped the service one Sunday morning. Instead, they preferred to play robbers and gendarmes. So that no one could watch them, they didn't frolic around the village as they always did, but rather sneaked into the forest. They were completely absorbed in their game, then saw a snow-white hare that could not walk properly, it was limping and dragging one leg. Immediately the boys stopped chasing each other, they made fun of chasing the damaged hare. They got deeper and deeper into the forest until they stood in front of an unknown cave into which the hare took refuge. They stood in fear of the dark entrance into the mountain. Only one of the boys dared to stand out with a cheeky word and shouted: "What have you got? He's trapped in there". He went into the cave.
For a long time nothing moved, but then the boys heard a pitiful scream from the cave, whereupon silence returned. In panic they ran into the village and alerted their parents. The missing boy's father immediately rushed to the cave with several other men. There they found the boy lying mangled on the floor. The hare had been nothing more than the cave pug, who had turned into a lame hare for mockery. Since then the cave has been called "Hasenloch".
