A high weir was built below Westewitz in 1923-25, spanning the Freiberg Mulde. The system has a height of 14 m, with 4 bulkheads it regulates the flow of water over a width of 53 m. Backwards, in the direction of Döbeln, enough meadow areas are available to use them as expansion areas for 3 km in an emergency and thus to relieve the hollow. It cannot provide absolute protection against flooding, but it has often helped with shorter rains and thus fulfilled its purpose. The Westewitzer Hochwehr is the largest in Europe and is still fully functional today despite its age.
In order not to leave it completely unused when the water level in the hollow is normal, a small hydroelectric power station was built on a side arm, the Mühlgraben. Even if its performance is not abundant, the water in the basin is used sensibly.
