The building is located on rue Saint-Jean in Colmar (another entrance is on Grand-Rue 43), not far from the Commanderie Saint-Jean, which, despite its name, has nothing in common.

This house has an architecture reminiscent of that of the Venetian palaces, with its gallery of vaulted arcades on two floors, surmounted by a stone balustrade, and those two buildings combined, on one side facing the street and on the other side the courtyard.

The building is actually a reconstruction of the 19th century, with the elements probably dismantled and then reassembled in Germany. It was built in 1608 by architect Albert Schmidt, who was also the master builder of the Maison des Têtes and the Maison des Arcades. This property was never owned by the Johannites and it is without any real basis that it is called the house of the Knights of Saint John.

Therefore, there is no real reason why it is called the "House of the Knight Saint-Jean."
