The area around this picturesque lake is not in vain under nature protection. Here live many rare species and the vegetation on and in the lake is also exceptional. The alpine lake, which characterizes the Almtal and flows into the Traun after 48 kilometers, rises from the Almsee.

A large-scale transformation of the Almtales took place at the end of the Würmeiszeit about 13,000 years ago by the late-glacial landslide in the Hetzau. In the process, about 0.5 km³ of rock material was released from the Büchsenkar of the Hochplattenkogel and filled the Hetzau and the Straneggbachtal up to the Almtal (for example in the area of the Gasthaus Jagersimmerl) with a Tomalandschaft. This 12 km long rubble tongue is one of the longest in the Eastern Alps. The pasture and the Weißeneggbach were dammed up and behind the alluvial cone the Almsee arose. Source: Wikipedia
