ATTENTION: The ruins may no longer be entered. I was there on 04/14/2023. There are prohibition signs and references to video surveillance. But I couldn't find any cameras.

About the exact date of construction, there are contradictory sources. Probably a first plant was built around the year 1165 by the then Archbishop of Mainz and applied in 1170 to the Rhinegraves as kurmainzisches fief. After a feud by Archbishop Werner von Eppstein with the Rhinegrave Siegfrid von Rheinberg in 1279, the castle was besieged by the Mainz. [1] For this purpose, the approximately 500 meters north and a little higher on the same mountain spur castle Blideneck was built as Trutzburg and the only 500 meters further west on a ridge opposite Aachener hill. In 1280, the castle Rheinberg was conquered and destroyed by the Mainz. After that, a reconstruction took place until 1315, during which the current keep was built. The castle was in 1399 Palatinate fief. From about the year 1400, the complex was expanded to a Ganerbenburg and inhabited by several families. In the centuries that followed, Rheinberg Castle, which had become strategically insignificant, was never destroyed again during warlike attacks; However, it was neglected structurally and finally abandoned. Since the end of the 18th century, the castle was uninhabitable and deteriorated rapidly as a ruin.
