The former double rampart dates from the 12th century. In the Middle Ages, Soest was the largest and most important city in Westphalia, which had acquired wealth through the fertile and abundant landscape of the Soester Börde and its location on the Hellweg. On the inner wall with the approximately 20 meters wide trees, a ditch, which was only temporarily filled with water, followed by kitchen gardens and an outer wall with a narrow ditch. In 1586 the outer wall was leveled and the ditch filled. The areas have long been overbuilt, only in a few places are remains of the old system to recognize. After the inner wall had expired in 1800, it was restored from 1818 to 1827. A tree-lined promenade path was created. Since then, around 600 lime trees have been planted on the six Soest Wall sections.
