"On the Gellertberg, formerly known as the Gipshübel, wine was already being cultivated by monks in the 12th century. The planer marl promotes the growth and taste of the wine that thrives here. But a visit to the Gellertberg (177.8 m) is not just for wine lovers recommend. Up there is a small former hunting lodge, today's "Gellerthäuschen”. The name is intended to commemorate the stay of the well-known poet Christian Fürchtegott Gellert in Oberau (1769). Next to it is an artificial ruin of a tower built in 1824 - it was used for manor festivals .

From here there is a wonderful view of the vineyards far to the south and west over Nassau and the Spargebirge, also of the Meissen Cathedral and the Albrechtsburg. On the round surface of the mountain, where ancient linden trees still stand today, hunting parties used to take place, harvest festivals were celebrated and forest services were held for a while. At the beginning of the 1950s, an open-air stage was set up there, on which the annual Whitsun singing has become a fine tradition.

The open-air stage on the Gellertberg has established itself more and more as a place for musical events and cabaret performances in the last 5 years and attracts numerous visitors to Niederau. But young artists also use the atmosphere for their songs." - freilichtbuehne-gellertberg.de
