Since then, the castle has been in a deep slumber and nature takes back what was snatched from it in the Middle Ages.

I found the castle ruins in Leonrod as one of the most tranquil and meditative places in my Franconian homeland. Precisely because the ruin is not one of the goals of mass tourism, those who are looking for wildly romantic tranquility will find a uniquely beautiful place that can usually be left to its own devices.

The castle was built in the 13th century by the Lords of Leonrod, who came from the Lords of Buttendorf, who had a castle in the village of Buttendorf near Roßtal.
In 1167, Rothenburg was still firmly in the hands of the Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa, and the Staufer started the road link to the imperial estates to secure Nuremberg with a system of castle complexes, which they occupied with loyal imperial officials.
In addition to Leonrod Castle and the Dietenhofen complex, Virnsberg and Rosenberg castles are also part of this castle system.

Leonrod was one of the few castles that was not destroyed in the Thirty Years' War. But soon after, in the spring of 1651, a conflagration put the castle in ruins. When people tried to clear the ditch of the Romanesque moated castle from undergrowth and weeds by burning, they paid no attention to the prevailing wind direction and the stately castle sank to rubble and ashes.

The ruin Leonrod, also called Burg Lewenrode, is the ruin of a moated castle on a pond in Biberttal.

The moated castle was built in the 13th century as the headquarters and Ganerbenburg by the Lords of Leonrod, who emerged from the Lords of Buttendorf, to secure an important road link to Nuremberg and 1235 with a Rudolf "miles de Lewenrode" first mentioned.

Surrounded by a deep moat, this very large castle complex had four buildings around a rectangular 20-meter-high keep with a 9-meter high entrance, a floor area of 6 by 6 meters and a wall thickness of around 2 meters. In the outer bailey was the castle chapel, St. Georgskapelle from 1327, as well as the hunting lodge with hipped roof construction and half-timbered upper floor. The castle complex still shows the almost preserved keep and stately remains of the walls, vaults and the fountain in the courtyard and a fore tower. The castle site is today a Bodendenkmal.

In Leonrod, a district of the market town of Dietenhofen (district of Ansbach) you can find the ruins of a "Ganerbeburg".
"Ganerbeburgen" ("Gan" means "common (sam)" in Old High German), also "commoner") were often created through inheritance divisions, with each branch of the family building its own residential building within a common wall. And it was the same in Leonrod, where several families of the “von Leonrod” family had inheritance rights.
The water castle of Leonrod was built in the 13th century and was then one of the few castles that was not destroyed during the Thirty Years' War (1618 - 1648).
But soon afterwards, the castle in Leonrod also suffered the fate of destruction. In 1651 the moat of the moated castle was to be cleared of undergrowth by burning. Unfortunately, the wind direction was not taken into account and the castle fell victim to the flames.
Since then, no renovation work has been carried out on the castle and it is becoming increasingly dilapidated. There are currently signs everywhere that entry is prohibited due to danger to life. That's why we only took a few photos through the entrance gates.

Actually a "well-preserved" ruin, if only it weren't for the ban on entry. But somehow the sign is only for decoration, because there are a lot of people.
