                            Many of my tours take me on the top of the dam dike along the water, because the alternatives - e.g. the cycle path along the B72 - are considerably less attractive. However, I make sure that I drive this way BEFORE or AFTER the daily rush of tourists and those in need of relaxation. On the one hand, selfishly, to have the ensemble for myself, on the other hand, because I don't want to disturb the many pedestrians. The path on the top of the dike is otherwise paved and easy to navigate.

                            The dam is of great importance for regional recreation. However, it primarily fulfills water management functions: It serves to protect the river valley below from flooding. Flood protection is ensured there for the towns of Thüle, Friesoythe, Kampe, Harkebrügge and Barßel. Water management, recreational use and nature conservation (since 1937) are in harmony at the dam.
                            With its extensive shallow water zones and the adjacent heath and dry sandy areas, it is an extremely valuable habitat for numerous – some of them threatened – animal and plant species. Due to its age and the condition of the dams and structures, the Thülsfeld dam was renovated from 2002 to 2006 at a cost of 15 million euros."
