      To prevent major flooding, the 220-hectare Alfsee between Rieste and Alfhausen was built in 1972 and can hold up to 13 million cubic meters of Hasewater; a reserve pool holds another eight million cubic meters.
      The reserve pool is designated as a nature reserve. The Alfsee is a 2.2 km² reservoir in the north of the Osnabrück district in Lower Saxony (Germany). It serves as a flood retention basin for the rabbit's catchment area and as a recreational area. Source asv Bersebrück
