Gigantic view of the Fichtelgebirge and in the direction of Kirchenlamitz, Rehau, Hof and Schönwald. The tower spirit at the entrance is happy about a small donation, but there is no fixed entrance fee and the tower is open all year round.

The Großer Kornberg with its 827 meter high summit is the northeastern cornerstone of the Fichtelgebirge. It is a wooded ridge that can be seen from afar thanks to the former Bundeswehr reconnaissance tower, and is the local mountain of Schönwald and Schwarzenbach an der Saale. Naturally, it belongs to the main unit Hohes Fichtelgebirge.

Former reconnaissance tower of the German Army.
The Kornberg is characterized by the German Army's radio reconnaissance tower, which was built in 1973 and operated from 1976 and is popularly known as "asparagus". During the Cold War, it was used to listen in on the military radio traffic of the Warsaw Pact's land forces. It was not until the years after 1955 that the mountain gained serious importance for national defense. The first reconnaissance troops of the German Army were sighted there in the 1960s, and in 1964 soldiers moved into reconnaissance barracks in nearby Martinlamitz. At the end of 1967, the public learned of the plan to build a radio reconnaissance tower on the Kornberg. The topping-out ceremony was celebrated on September 10, 1974, and the tower was opened on October 26, 1976. In 1977, construction of a second floor was completed.[7]

The site for the tower, including the operating buildings, extends over 26,000 m². The tower is 64 m high, the diameter at its base is a good 8 m, and the foundation reaches a depth of 4.5 m. For the tower shaft and the foundation alone, 2500 m³ of concrete and 300 t of steel were used within the first eleven months.[7]

The tower was operated by the 946th Signal Company, which was stationed in Hof/Saale. After the Soviet troops withdrew from the former GDR in 1994, the Signal Company and the tower were decommissioned. Since then, it has been used by the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits in Erlangen, among others. Due to asbestos contamination, high maintenance costs and no prospect of economic use, the tower is to be demolished in 2022.[8]

Two identical Bundeswehr listening stations were also located on elevations directly on the former NATO eastern border. These were installations near the GDR on the Hohen Meißner near Kassel (demolished in 2002) and in the North German lowlands on a 120 m high elevation in Barwedel in Lower Saxony.
