Zwickau Cathedral St. Mary's is an impressive Gothic cathedral from the 12th century that fascinates with its majestic size, delicate stonemasonry and artistic stained glass windows. Inside you will find an almost mystical atmosphere, a magnificent high altar and numerous historical tombs that bear witness to the cathedral's eventful past.

St. Mary's Cathedral is one of the most important hall churches of the Upper Saxon late Gothic period.

The building, which was built in the 12th century, was rebuilt in the late Gothic style between 1453 and 1565. The current baroque spire was added between 1671 and 1677. With a height of 88 meters, it is still the tallest building in Zwickau today.

During the Reformation, Johann Wildenau (known as Egranus), who was in close contact with the Wittenberg reformers, worked in St. Mary's Church from 1517, and Thomas Müntzer in 1520. In 1521, Nikolaus Hausmann was appointed the first Protestant pastor, at whose suggestion Luther wrote the "Small Catechism".

The baptismal register of St. Mary's Church records the baptism of little Robert Schumann on June 14, 1810. This is where he made one of his first public appearances: at the age of eleven, Schumann took part as a pianist in the performance of the oratorio "The Last Judgement" under the direction of his teacher Johann Gottfried Kuntsch. He later wrote: "It is one of the most remarkable buildings in Saxony, dark and somewhat fantastic in appearance."

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Mary in Zwickau, elevated to a cathedral by Reich Bishop Ludwig Müller in 1935 for the 800th anniversary, is the most important city church of the Evangelical Lutheran Nicolai parish of Zwickau and the Ephoral Church of the Superintendent of the Evangelical Lutheran Church District of Zwickau. It was built in the early Middle Ages and was damaged and rebuilt several times. The church is a listed building.

At the end of the 19th century, the buttresses were given another sculptural program depicting apostles, prophets and personalities of the Reformation.

Inside, visitors come across numerous art treasures, such as the winged altar by Dürer's teacher Michael Wohlgemuth or the group of figures of the Lamentation of Christ by Peter Breuer.

You can also see the Holy Sepulchre by Michael Heuffner or the baptismal font and pulpit by Paul Speck from the 16th century.
