The history of Les Marnières is not recent. An ancient river, today
disappeared, shaped a valley that can be seen below the path of
the Pond. The stream that runs along this valley is not of natural origin. The lesson
of water, bearing the name of Grand Roua, is called, on the other side of the barrier
linguistic, the Ezelsbeek, literally "the donkey's brook".
It rises at the storm basin located in Awans, near the road bridge
of iron, on the edge of the village of Bierset. The Grand Roua is formed by the waters
waste and runoff. It flows through the whole Commune and flows
in the Geer.

The site was recognized in 2005 by the Walloon Region as a Site de Grand
Biological interest. This recognition of the Marnières is very important because
it allows the protection of the site. It is obviously an argument of
weight to challenge any project that distorts the place.
There is a relationship between the nature of the soil and the flora that grows there. In the
case we are dealing with, the presence of marl on the site allows growth
calciphilic plants (literally: "who like limestone"). Among these, let us quote the emblematic orchid, Epipactis helleborine (Epipactis broad
leaves). Although present in many places in Belgium, the orchid
is on the list of species to be protected.
