Originally, the city's town hall was located on the corner of Grote Markt and Sint-Truiderstraat (today's Huis Boulet), until the great fire of 1677 reduced almost the entire city to rubble. The construction of the new town hall only began in 1737 on the site where the Cloth Hall and the Kleersnijderskamer previously stood. The building is a beautiful example of the Maasland architectural style. Also note the memorial plaques on the left side facade.
An interesting question: Does Tongeren Town Hall look familiar? That is quite possible. It is a one-to-one copy of the Liège town hall. The Liège architect Pascal Barbier designed the plans for both buildings.

The old cloth hall and the tailor's room, which were destroyed in the fire of 1677, stood on the site of the current town hall. The Tongeren town hall, which was located on the corner of the Grote Markt and Sint-Truiderstraat, also went up in flames during this fire.
On February 27, 1737, the city council decided to build a new town hall on the grounds of the destroyed cloth hall. Two months later, on April 26, 1737, the foundation stone was laid in the presence of mayors Willem-Abraham Cours and Jacob Grouwels. By the end of 1738, the structural work was largely complete, but due to the outbreak of the War of the Austrian Succession, the completion of the town hall was delayed until 1755. The plans for the town hall were drawn up by Pascal Barbier, who was inspired by the town hall of Liège.
Nowadays, the town hall has a more ceremonial function, as the municipal services are located in the Praetorium on Maastrichterstraat.
