With the establishment of the first chair for anatomy and botany in 1589 and its appointment by Caspar Bauhin (1560–1624), a medicinal garden was also created, a so-called hortus medicus. In 1692 the medicinal garden was closed.

In 1695, merchant Hans Franz Sarasin (1649–1719) purchased the property and designed a pleasure garden on it. As a striking element, an artistically crafted pleasure house connects the upper and middle terraces. At the end of the 18th century, the Sarasin family seemed to lose interest in gardening. The garden is neglected and is once again used by the university. From 1867 zoology used the lower levels.

With the renovation of the garden in 2017 by the city gardening department, the garden's valuable inventory was repaired and interpreted in a contemporary way.

Don't expect too many plants or even a botanical garden. But it's a nice way to get to the Rhine, away from the tourist crowds. Also because it's a dead-end street. It's also a place with a beautiful history. Of course, there are plenty of those in Basel.
