Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was known to be a diligent hiker. He is said to have visited on July 1, 1785 in his great Fichtelgebirgswanderung this place. Reason enough to miss the name of the viewing platform Goethefelsen. He was right. The hiking diversity here at Ochsenkopf is unique and just waiting to be explored.

Here you should pay attention to adders, this is the only remaining venomous snake in Germany which is one of the endangered species. In the summit area of the Ochsenkopf the snake meets quite often.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe visited this place in 1785 during his Fichtelgebirge hikes and made a drawing of the rock. In 1986 the striking rock was rediscovered and named after Goethe. You should definitely make the small detour, about 100m from the summit, worth seeing rock formation and great view.

On his first of three journeys through the Fichtel Mountains, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe visited the Ochsenkopf in 1785. On one of these trips he made a drawing of a striking rock in the Ochsenkopf area. The exact location of the rock has long been unknown. In 1986 Böhm rediscovered him.

As for the snakes .....
Adders can be found everywhere in the Fichtelgebirge, not only here. Although they are quite shy, one of them has bitten me while mowing the grass. I only noticed it for 2 days based on the bite marks on my leg and put it away without further ado.

The rock on the Ochsenkopf summit owes its name to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who visited and drew it on July 1, 1785 on his great Fichtelgebirge hike from Wunsiedel to the Ochsenkopf.
The Goethefelsen is part of a rock ridge that extends south-east on the mountain; it is a protected natural monument. Originally the rock was called Dreiadlerfelsen, Dreiadelsfelsen or Dreiahornfelsen.

On his first of three trips through the Fichtel Mountains, J.W. von Goethe visited the Ochsenkopf in 1785. He was accompanied by his friend Karl Ludwig Knebel and Friedrich Gottlieb Dietrich, a young botanist. Written records of the day hike into the central area of the Fichtel Mountains have been handed down from these two. Goethe hiked from Wunsiedel up to the Ochsenkopf. (...from information board)
