The Old Fortress is separated from the rest of the island by an artificial canal built by the Venetians. It is a spacious area that houses, among other things, a large modern café and the Music Department of the Ionian University. So if you are lucky you get some nice music for the iced coffee through the open windows of the university.
From the highest point at the Leuchturmhäuschen you have a great view over the old town, the harbor and the sea to Albania.

Admission: 4 €
Opening hours: April - Oct daily from 8:00 - 20:00, Nov - March Tue - Sun from 8:00 - 15:00.

History:
In Byzantine times in the 9th century, a castle was built on the peninsula, then expanded in the 13th and 14th centuries and again significantly enlarged and rebuilt by the Venetians in the 16th century. Finally, the fort was also used by the British, who built barracks and a hospital.

A beautiful view from up here of the old town, 6 euros for the ticket to visit including climbing the fortress tower with cross, 15 euros with additional authorization for entry to the museums on the site.
