The famous chalk cliffs on Rügen stretch over a length of 15 kilometers

on the Jasmund peninsula - from Sassnitz to the municipality of Glowe.

The sight alone is magnificent, after all, you don't get to see such impressive white rocks,

which rise 120 meters up, every day. But the history of their formation is also a source of amazement and admiration: the rocks were composed more than 50 million years ago from calcareous, fossil-like remains of various small animals that were deposited in the sea and solidified into rock over time.

Together with sand, clay and other rock, the chalk cliffs we know today were formed.

White natural monument

North of Sassnitz, roughly from the Gakow shore, one of Germany's most beautiful hiking trails begins along the Baltic Sea. The approximately 11-kilometer-long high-shore trail leads

via the Königsstuhl National Park Center to Lohme and just before Glowe. This stretch of coast is characterized by the picturesque, bizarre cliffs with

the striking, white, shining chalk cliffs.

This path takes you to striking points such as the well-known Wissower Klinken,

the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Sicht at Tipper Ort, or the Victoriasicht and of course the Königsstuhl as the most famous chalk cliff formation in the Stubbenkammer in the

Jasmund National Park.

The two main pinnacles of the Wissower Klinken collapsed into the sea in February 2005 and no longer appear in their original tectonic formation. In this context, it is also a myth that the famous painting by Caspar David Friedrich “Chalk Cliffs on Rügen” depicts the Wissower Klinken, which did not even exist at the time the painting was created. In addition to walking on the hiking trail from Sassnitz to Lohme, you can also reach the Königsstuhl by bus from Sassnitz.
