The main castle of the Herten moated castle is a brick building surrounded by a moat. It is considered an example of architecture from the late Gothic period. The castle was first mentioned in documents in 1376. Relics of a massive keep, in the eastern part of the north wing in the form of a column with a Gothic cross vault, still bear witness to the defensive character of the formerly small castle complex.

In 1529, the castle came into the possession of Bertram von Nesselrode, hereditary chamberlain of the Duchy of Berg, through marriage. This politically important man - he was the Electorate of Cologne's governor in Vest Recklinghausen from 1539 to 1556 - continued the expansion of the house.

Around 1530, a four-sided fort with corner pavilion towers was built, which still exist today. At the same time, a rectangular rampart with corner bastions was built. Thanks to this fortification, the castle withstood a siege (1593) during the Truchsess War.
