"In addition to Altena Castle, Burg Holtzbrinck is the only representative secular building of art historical importance and at the same time the oldest town house in the city. It was first mentioned in 1643 when it was acquired by the rentmaster Georg Holtzbrinck. However, it seems certain that the oldest part of the house already exists dates from the 16th century.
Stephan Johann, the son of Georg Holtzbrinck, made significant changes to the building. This gave the house roughly its current shape in 1673-1689, including the? Old staircase? came into being at that time. The kitchen, cloakroom and toilets are now housed in the 1937 garage.
The name? Castle? Holtzbrinck received the house due to its castle-like layout.
The city of Altena bought the entire site in 1972. After several years of work, the building was restored and given its new purpose in 1976: the castle became the "Bürgerburg", a meeting place that is available to every visitor for resting, reading and attending events. In the years 1980/81 the underground car park was built and the garden above was created in the Rococo style. "
