The historic Kirrweiler was not only the summer residence of the prince-bishops of Speyer, but from 1431-1797 also the administrative seat of the prince-bishop's office. The fortress wall surrounded the old town center and was at the same time an indication of the importance of Kirrweiler as the seat of the upper office, because villages were actually not allowed to have fortifications of this kind.
