Niederschönhausen Castle, the eventful history is briefly presented here in the pavilion.
The palace gained historical importance during the reign of Frederick the Great as the summer residence of Queen Elisabeth Christine of Prussia and as the official residence of Wilhelm Pieck, the first (and only) President of the German Democratic Republic (GDR).
Schönhausen Palace has been open to visitors for museum use since December 2009. It belongs to the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg.

With the founding of the GDR in 1949, Schloss Schönhausen was transferred from the Soviet Union to the GDR and served Wilhelm Pieck from 1949 to 1960 as the official residence of the President of the GDR. For this purpose, it was in turn to rebuild the castle and an extension of the complex to the north by garages for the vehicle fleet of the President and to the south for a casino and a chancellery in a representative courtyard with two gatehouses. The castle garden was separated by a wall into an inner, no longer public, and an outer, public part. The interior design of the garden architect Reinhold Lingner as a cheerful, open-looking garden in the typical style of the 1950s.
