The Schlayerturm (Schlayer Tower) is a defensive tower located in the western part of Nuremberg's last city fortifications. It was built in 1422 as a square sandstone ashlar structure with an octagonal, pointed tent roof. After the foundations became weak in 1519, its height was reduced. Together with the Fronfeste (Fortress), the tower protected the Pegnitz estuary. Severely damaged in World War II, it was later restored to its original height.

The Fronveste (Fortress), a bridge-like sandstone ashlar structure with a gable roof, was built around 1490 and originally served as an armory, hence the name "Spießhaus" (Spit House). Together with the Schlayerturm, it secured the Pegnitz estuary. In the 19th century, the Fronfeste was used as a prison, thus receiving its current name. After being destroyed in World War II, it was rebuilt and served as a retirement home until the 1980s. Today, it houses students and emigrants. On the city side of the Fronfeste is the Kettensteg (Chain Bridge), built in 1824.
