At the castle ruins you can climb a tower and enjoy the wonderful view. You can see as far as the Milseburg and the Wasserkuppe.

The Auerburg experienced the last major construction phase in the 14th century when the bishops of Würzburg were the owners and used the building as an administrative seat.

Destroyed in the Peasants' War in 1525, the complex remained in ruins and was used more and more as a quarry for the surrounding towns. Some enclosing walls and a remainder of the tower have been preserved and are accessible.

The Auersburg is located above Hilders and is a lovely destination.

You can start the hike from Hilders or walk to a hiking car park a little above Hilders.

You walk past meadows, fields and forests. The ruins invite you to take a rest. A pavilion protects you from the sun and rain. It is a great place to have a picnic. From the tower you have a great view of the Wasserkuppe.

Entrance gate to the Auersburg castle ruins.
This castle was built around 1120. Sturdy shoes are highly recommended, especially because of the descent from the castle.
