The Porta Nigra (Latin for "Black Gate") is a former Roman city gate and a well-known landmark of the city of Trier. The name Porta Nigra comes from the Middle Ages. Another name in the Middle Ages was Porta Martis "Gate of Mars". The Trier residents usually refer to the Porta Nigra as just "Porta".
Since 1986 the Porta Nigra has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Roman Monuments, Cathedral and Church of Our Lady in Trier. It is also a protected cultural asset under the Hague Convention. The Porta Nigra is the best preserved Roman city gate in Germany.
