At the time of its construction, the monumental thermal baths from the 2nd century were the second largest bathing complex in the entire Roman Empire. It covered an area of 42,000 square meters and was almost the size of six soccer fields. In the oldest bathing facility in the city, guests were offered wellness and relaxation at the highest level. In several, partly Heated swimming pools and a swimming pool, the guests spent time in a wellness oasis with a cultural center. Libraries, restaurants, shops and beauty salons were available to visitors.

At the footbridges you can walk a bit over the excavations - what you see exactly changes from time to time, depending on where the archaeologists are currently active.

The largest thermal baths in the entire Roman Empire stretched here on around 42,000 square meters - outside of Rome. This monumental size was expensive. After all, wellness starts in the head. And so marble Amazons based on the Greek model, remains of columns and bodies of young men (today in the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier) give an impression of how much one indulged in artistic relaxation in the Barbarathermen.

It is very impressive in terms of size, but there is very little to see. Admission is free.

The Imperial Baths are the monumental remains of a large-scale planned late antique Roman bath complex and later cavalry barracks that have been preserved in the center of the Rhineland-Palatinate city of Trier. The building, with its walls that are still 19 meters high in places, is one of the largest Roman baths north of the Alps and has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Trier since 1986. The building has been a listed building since 1989[1] and is considered a cultural asset under the Hague Convention. Despite their planned size, the Imperial Baths, which were never completed, would not have been the largest bath buildings in Trier, as they were surpassed by the much older Barbara Baths. Today, the site of the baths is designated as an archaeological park. Other baths in Trier were the baths at the Viehmarkt.

The four insulae that the later bathing palace was to occupy had already been densely built up in earlier times. The street axes that enclosed these rectangular insulae were based on the original foundation plan of the city, which was probably founded in 16 BC[7] and were oriented southeast and northeast. The Decumanus Maximus, the southeast-running main street that led from the site of the first Moselle bridge over the central axis of the forum to the four insulae, cut through them in the middle in the original planning grid, although the two eastern ones were not part of the original foundation scheme. This is shown by studies of the substructure of the oldest streets, which had diabase embroidery.[8] The buildings on the main street - in the line at the southwest end of which was the amphitheater built during the second half of the 2nd century AD - were representative and belonged to the urban upper class.

Only the north-western of the four insulae in the area of the later Palaestra has been intensively investigated so far. The insula opposite it, which was later also covered by the Palaestra, has only been touched upon. It was clear that in the two areas, which - as described above - belonged to the original foundation scheme, four construction phases must be expected during the early and middle imperial period alone. The oldest traces of construction were attributed to the reign of Emperor Claudius.

The construction of the extraordinarily solid bathing complex was carried out with great care. For today's visitors, it often seems absurd that the partially artistically constructed masonry of the late antique buildings was ultimately plastered, painted and thus no longer visible. In the area of the hot bath in particular, the architecture can still be studied over several floors. Layers of carefully trimmed limestone blocks are followed in clear alternation by horizontally inserted brick bands (brick shot), whereby these architecturally interesting structures also ultimately form the formwork for the wall core cast from Roman concrete (opus caementitium). Many of the construction measures considered visually appealing today served to ensure stability and were, among other things, based on experience in earthquake-prone regions.
