The Königssee is a former basalt mine. Until 1942, the material was mined here and crushed to gravel. Then the mining stopped and the pit filled with groundwater. You can still see the quarries on the steep banks.

A small path leads down to the idyllic lake. Here you will find a quiet place for your picnic or a short break. However, you have to refrain from bathing or fishing, because this has not been allowed for several years.

The Eifel ladder leads around the Königssee. However, the lake is so idyllic that you should definitely visit it. The lake is accessible to hikers all year round (see eifel.info/a-koenigssee), but camping or swimming is prohibited.
There is also a geological hiking trail around the lake. So the 'no trespassing' sign can be ignored.

For a description of the Königssee see aw-wiki.de/index.php/K%c3%b6nigssee

With a bit of luck, you can also see sand lizards on the lake shore!

The Königssee is 1 ha in size and 30 meters deep. Here tertiary basalt rock was mined until 1942, which was broken into gravel.
The Königssee, filled with groundwater, developed from the mining pit.
The basalt rock was brought to crushing plants in Oberzissen via a cable car. The gravel was brought from the Brohltalbahn to the Rhine port for shipment.

Somewhat hidden lake. You can only get close to the water through two entrances. But there is no really wide bank area.
On one side there are two small footbridges, on the other side a small meadow approx. 5m above the water surface.

A wonderful excursion area. Unfortunately, you can only get there by a steep path or a forest path. People used to swim in it, but this is now forbidden. Above the lake there are information boards that explain the career. During our hike, the lake shone turquoise.

If you want to rest here, you will find a nice seat a little bit to the left of the path. There is also a jetty on the water, but swimming or fishing is prohibited.

"East of Oberdürenbach lies the former basalt cone "Steinberg" (Steimerich), one of the three tertiary volcanoes in the Brohl valley. The quality of the basalt rock was ideal for road construction (cobblestones), as track ballast or as basalt chippings. As early as 1870 there were interested parties who considered industrial mining of this natural treasure.

In the 1920s, Steinhandel Rauen AG from Mühlheim/Ruhr acquired the concession to operate the quarry on the Steinberg in order to mine the coveted natural stone on a large scale. For this purpose, the company built a large gravel works in Oberzissen in 1924. At first the material was transported there by horse and ox carts. From 1925 onwards, a practical connection between the quarry and the gravel works was created by building a cable car. The stone material was transported on to the Rhine port in Brohl by the Brohltalbahn. From Brohl, the building materials for road construction, for bank reinforcements on rivers, canals and the sea were transported by ship or Reichsbahn to destinations in Germany and abroad.

After a short time, the hilltop had disappeared. Over the years, the workers created a crater almost 75 m deep with their pneumatic chisels. In the process, they came across two springs that poured over 30 cubic meters per day. These masses of water had to be pumped out every day before work began.

During the Second World War, work on the Steimerich was stopped. In a very short time, the quarry filled up with spring water. This created a lake about one hectare in size with a water depth of up to 30 m. Even during the war, the clean water was used for bathing.

The idea of reopening the quarry in the 1950s was quickly abandoned. The Rauen company preferred to invest in the existing quarry on the Hannebacher Ley..."
