The St. Laurentiuskirche in Thurnau is connected to the castle by a wooden bridge. In this way, the lords of the castle were able to reach the two-story patron box inside the church dry-footed. Magnificent carvings, baroque stucco work and Pietist ceiling paintings testify to rule and belief.

The St. Laurentius Church presents itself as a hall building. It corresponds to a late Gothic choir tower church, which was renovated according to the Bayreuth margrave style. The choir tower is east and square. It has four floors, which are divided by cornices on the outside. The tower on the first floor has an ogival window on each side. A slate pointed helmet completes the building at the top. It was installed in 1874 and has a tower pommel and a simple, golden cross at the top.

The nave is also almost square and is divided from three to three axes. Each side has a central portal, which is characterized by blown gables and Tuscan columns. There is a large window to the left and right of it. Oval ox eyes can be seen above the portals. On the west side, the wooden passage from the castle meets the church building. Inside, the choir occupies two tower floors. Cross vaults run through the choir, which merge into mirror vaults in the direction of the nave.

The altar, which dominates the east wall of the choir, was created in 1703 and is attributed to Elias Räntz. A stone base leads to the wooden superstructure. The six-column altar features a perspective that resembles a stage set. Thus, it fully corresponds to the Baroque ideal, which was committed to the idea of staging. The columns feature putti in their rectangular bases. The round column shafts are decorated with gold. The front columns bear gold foliage along the column edges.

The central altarpiece depicts the rare motif of Christ teaching and bears the golden inscription: "John 6:51. I am the living bread/come from heaven/whoever eats of this bread/will live forever." A crucifix in front of it obscures a small image in the predella. An actual altarpiece is missing; two seated female figures lead to a large coat of arms of the Künsberg-Thurnau line.

Access to the pulpit on the left side of the chancel arch is through the gallery of the north wall. The stucco pulpit was built in 1706 by the Italian Bernardino Quadri, who also created the stucco ceiling. At the entrance to the pulpit and on the pulpit basket are blind arcades depicting Kings Solomon and David and the Old Testament prophets Elijah, Jeremiah, Daniel, and Ezekiel. Two further stucco figures support the sounding board. They are Moses with the Tablets of the Law and a figure with a cross and lamb, which has been interpreted as John the Baptist or as an allegory of the Church.[10] In the sounding board, a dove symbolizes the Holy Spirit. The edge of the lid is decorated with putti, and an angel sits enthroned on the sounding board, holding a book with the inscription "Rev. John 14.7 Fear God and give Him glory."
