the concentration camp existed from 1938-45. Created to run a brick factory and produce bricks, over 100,000 people were locked up here to do forced labor. Many died, as can be clearly seen in the House of Remembrance.

The area is large, a tour is highly recommended. Likewise, a visit to the two exhibitions and the House of Remembrance. You can certainly spend a whole day here.

From 1938 to 1945, the largest concentration camp in northwest Germany, Neuengamme, was located in the southeast of Hamburg. More than 100,000 people from all over Europe were imprisoned in the main camp and in over 85 satellite camps. At least 42,900 prisoners died in Neuengamme, in the satellite camps and at the end of the war during the camp clearances. After the war, the British occupying authorities set up an internment camp in the former concentration camp for three years. From 1948, the city of Hamburg used the buildings and grounds for penal enforcement and built two prisons there. In 1965, an international memorial was built on the edge of the site, which was supplemented in 1981 by an exhibition building (“Document House”). A decision by the Senate to relocate the prison was politically controversial for a long time. The two prisons were only closed in 2003 and 2006.

This meant that the memorial at the site of the former prisoner camp could be expanded into an exhibition, meeting and study center.
