The Neuengamme parish was mentioned in a document as early as 1261. The church was rebuilt and expanded several times over time, so that today it is the result of different construction periods.

The main room is a hall church made of brick and fieldstone with a wooden barrel ceiling. It is complemented by a free-standing wooden bell tower.

In the long walls of the building there are still parts of the field stone masonry from the 13th century and a similarly old brick portal in the north wall. The Gothic choir, made of brick, probably dates from the following century. No more precise information about the construction has been provided for the period before the 17th century.

Between 1801 and 1803 a wooden vault was added to the building, the church was expanded to the west and the interior was rebuilt in the classicist style. In keeping with contemporary taste, the church was given surrounding galleries. Due to woodworm infestation, renovation of the entire interior became increasingly urgent in the 20th century. The architects Friedhelm Grundmann and Horst Sandtmann therefore completely redesigned the interior between 1956 and 1961. In order to regain the assumed original spatial impression, they removed the classicist galleries and the old altar, opened walled-up Gothic niches and installed new, brighter windows.
