The sculptor Hansjörg Wagner created this statue in 1986, The Zitronenjette was selling its goods on the streets of Hamburg's Neustadt and St. Paulis at the end of the 19th century. Johanne Henriette Marie Müller, her real name, was born on July 18, 1841 and died on July 8, 1916. Even as a child, when she lived with her family in one of the poor Gängeviertel, she had to make a living. She subsequently gained fame through the famous play. Alongside the water carrier Hummel, it is the best-known Hamburg original. In contrast to what she was supposed to do on her way through life, touching her outstretched finger should bring luck.

In 1986, a memorial to Zitronenjette was erected near the Michel (St. Michael's Church) and the Krameramtsstuben (Cramer's Office). It was created by the sculptor Hansjörg Wagner. The plaque reads in Low German: "Your life was as sour as lemons, is remembering you worthwhile? Your fate is worth remembering all the people for whom happiness has no time."

In High German, this translates as: "Your life was as sour as lemons, is remembering you worthwhile? Your fate reminds us of all the people for whom happiness has no time." Like the water carrier Hummel, Zitronenjette is one of Hamburg's originals. The memorial enjoys great popularity. Zitronenjette's outstretched hand has been polished to a shine over the years, as touching it is said to bring good luck.
