"... The humpback bridge doesn't look that massive: its 15 centimetre thick individual parts are connected to each other by joints - like the link bracelet of a watch. So that the bridge can bend to allow ships to pass through, the pylons are pulled inland by hydraulic cylinders. The supporting cable is tightened and the bridge arches upwards - up to nine metres. This unique mechanism was thought up by the Stuttgart professor Jörg Schlaich, and the Duisburg company Stahlbau Raulf implemented his idea. The hydraulic system of the "humpback bridge" is operated by the bridge keeper at the Schwanentor.

It crosses the harbour basin and connects the old town park with the marina and five boats. In addition to the resulting span of 73 m and a width of 3.5 m, the footbridge must be able to be raised from its normal position by 10.60 m above normal water level to enable ships to pass through the harbour basin.
