The city hall on Burgplatz is steeped in history: the royal palace was located there in the early Middle Ages, and the town hall was still a modest building in the city plan of Johannes Corputius in 1566. However, in the 19th century the young industrial city of Duisburg attracted more and more people , so that in 1843 a new building had to be built.

In 1895, the city fathers decided to build an even bigger town hall, which was realized in three phases. Around two courtyards, the wings of the building and a 67-meter-high town hall tower were erected. However, after the bombing of the Second World War, both were replaced by simpler forms. The town hall received a simple pitched roof, the tower - formerly with a baroque hood - an unobtrusive top.

"... The history of the Duisburg town hall has its roots in the Middle Ages. It was first mentioned as" domus consulum "in 1361. Only about 200 years later is there a graphic tradition of the building. In 1566, the Corputius plan shows the City of Duisburg next to the Salvatorkirche, on the site of the former royal court, a small, modest building: the town hall.
In the course of industrialization in the 19th century, the city's population doubled, which led to the construction of a new, larger town hall in 1843. But soon this building is no longer enough either.
In 1895 a competition was announced in which 83 architects took part. The winning design by Friedrich Ratzel from Karlsruhe was realized in three construction phases from 1897-1902 (costs: 2.6 million gold marks).
The building, designed in the style of the historicizing early Renaissance, was erected on the site of the previous building. The main facade faced Burgplatz, had two inner courtyards and a 67 meter high town hall tower. The main entrance was marked by a central projection with a magnificent gable and a baroque dome. The market took place on the Burgplatz in front of the town hall.
The town hall was badly damaged in the Second World War and the roofing of all the buildings was destroyed. In the course of the restoration, the building was given a gable roof, the roofing of the entrance portal was not rebuilt, the tower was crowned with a simple spike. The ring development of the Burgplatz was also lost forever, so that the complex has remained open and undesigned to this day.
An archaeological site was built at the back of the town hall, as the foundations of the medieval market halls had been found there. On the side of the Burgplatz, the Mercator Fountain, built in 1878, has been preserved.
With its surrounding buildings, Burgplatz is the historical core of the city. The former strategic, urban and social importance of the place has lost some of its importance, but the Burgplatz with the surrounding buildings remains the place of origin and the historical core of the city. ... "
