The Pfaffenteich, centrally located in Schwerin, is a unique ensemble of water, Günderzeit houses and avenue. A boat drives him during the season.

The Pfaffenteich (Low German Papendiek) was created by embankment of a dam (later called Spieltordamm) at the northern end, probably shortly after the city was founded in the 12th century, initially as a mill pond in a formerly boggy depression. The water originally had an extension of about 350 meters to the south of the Schloßstraße, where the Mühlendamm limited it to the south and a watermill that had been occupied since 1178 was operated. From here the water flowed into the Burgsee. A count's mill was in operation until the 19th century. At the Aubach was a second mill, which came into the possession of the cathedral chapter, from then on was called Bischofsmühle and was operated until 1914. A common argument between the counts and the cathedral chapter, which could also take possession of the mill pond, was the water level. The canons, who at that time still ordered their gardens on the east bank, were the namesake of the popular name “Pfaffenteich”.

The name of the northern boundary, Spieltordamm, is derived from the central German word Spiel, which means "stake". At that time, a number of piles protected the dam, which can be reached through a so-called play gate. The game gate, a watch and goal scorer's house, was built in 1710 and demolished in 1816. The dam was not expanded until 1826. The water of the Pfaffenteich once fed a city moat.

Surrounded by several historic buildings, the Pfaffenteich is one of the most beautiful places in the state capital. The attractions around the lake include, for example, the Kükenhaus, the historical arsenal of Schwerin and the Stadtbad am Spieltordamm.

The Pfaffenteich used to be part of the Ziegelsee. Eventually, however, the two bodies of water were separated from one another by embankment. The name of the pond originally comes from a church that owned it for a long time. Since church people used to be called "priests" in the vernacular, this word was also used for the water body in relation to the former owners.
