The Abbey of Sant'Egidio in Fontanella is a fascinating place full of history. The church suddenly appears at the end of a winding road up the eastern slope of Mount Canto. Its architecture is simple, with a sobriety typical of poor foundations in the province. It can also be visited inside.

The monastery today presents itself with a fairly uniform style despite the events and alterations that have taken place over the various centuries, unlike other affiliations of the Benedictine order in the Lombardy area.

The general project of the monastery, entirely built between about 1080 and 1130, is simple, conforming to an architectural sobriety typical of poor and decentralized foundations.

However, the planimetric scheme responds sufficiently to the Benedictine abbey prototypes of San Gallo, of Cluny itself and above all of Vertemate.

The current monastic complex is the result of a series of building stratifications that occurred over the centuries.

The whole complex of buildings that accompanied the enlargement of the church around 1130 was added to the simple original construction of the years around 1080.

In 1320 a part of the buildings of the monasteries was demolished, but they were rebuilt in 1338.

In 1373, there is a second destruction which substantially repeats that of 1320.

In 1432 there was a resumption of building activity with the "Avogadri" reconstruction: it was in this period that the so-called "palace", the perpendicular wing to the church, was restored.

At the end of the 15th century the south-west tower was built by Bishop Gabriel, who sealed it with his coat of arms, still visible on the west side.

Finally, in the 1600s, a sacristy with a portico and a chapel for the dead from the Manzonian plague were built against the entire north side of the church.
