    The church of Santa Barbara is a hidden treasure of Mount Canto, located a few meters from the remains of the ghost town of Canto. The church is the only surviving building kept in perfect condition. It offers a spectacular panoramic view, where on very clear weather days you can admire the Apennines to the south and the chain of Alps from Monviso to the Bernina glaciers to the west and north. The church is surrounded by an open space with benches and trees, an ideal place for a break or a picnic.

            The church of Borgo del Canto, dedicated to Santa Barbara, today represents the only surviving building still properly maintained in this ancient village.

            During the 16th and 17th centuries the village of Canto underwent important architectural changes: in addition to the pre-existing typically peasant structures, other buildings of different textures and types were built.

            These constructions changed the perimeter of the town, which lost its primitive defensive characteristic. At the same time, the first church of the village was built, which became an autonomous center also under the religious aspect.
