In 1826, the last wild beaver was caught and killed on the IJssel River.

From that sad moment on, the beaver was officially extinct in the Netherlands.

Between 1988 and 1991, pairs of beavers that came from the Elbe region in the former GDR were released into what is now De Biesbosch National Park. After this successful reintroduction, beavers were also released into the Gelderse Poort nature reserve in the province of Gelderland in 1994.

The otter lasted a little longer, but due to persistent prejudices - otters were said to empty entire rivers, for example, and thus threaten the livelihoods of Dutch fishermen - the animals were hunted intensively until the 1960s. The last otter was run over in 1989 in the province of Friesland. From then on, the otter was officially extinct in the Netherlands.

In 2002, it was also time for the otter to return to the Netherlands. Several pairs of this species were also relocated here from Eastern Europe.

In 2020, the number of otters in the Netherlands was estimated at 450, compared to 360 a year earlier.
