"The church of St. Johannis, built around 1150 (at the time of Henry the Lion), once shaped the cityscape of the Norderstadt and is the oldest church in the city of Verden.The tower is adorned with a baroque tower cap since 1697. It is considered the oldest sacral brick building in northern Germany.

The originally Romanesque building, which had already been preceded by a wooden church, was later extended or reshaped in the Gothic style. Stylistic elements of the Romanesque style can be seen on the tower and in the barrel vaults of the choir. In the 14th century the gothic aisles were added and the church got Gothic inside. The tower with the arched frieze, the choir and the central nave pillars are still largely Romanesque.

From the medieval painting of the church frescoes of the apostles in the vaulted ceiling are only partially preserved. Unlike the choir wall: there is a crucifixion group from 1350 and St. Christophorus from 1400. The images of the saints on the southern pillars begin with John the Baptist, to whom this church is dedicated. The Protestant Prince-Bishop Philipp Sigismund (1586 - 1623) had the church artistically designed.

Worth seeing is also the equipment: Gothic frescoes have been preserved in the choir and other parts of the church. The baroque pulpit was completed in 1598. The impressive stucco relief over the entrance to the choir dates from this period. The ossuary on the south side of the church reminds that until 1807 the churchyard was located here.

The Baroque pulpit - it bears the coat of arms of Prince-Bishop Philipp Sigismund and other bourgeois coats of arms and representations of the four evangelists - was completed in 1598. An early work of stucco in Germany is the relief above the crucifixion group. It was made in the years around 1596 by the plasterer Gerhard Schmidt and shows the Last Judgment.
