Königstein Castle was probably built in the 11th century and served to secure the important imperial road between Frankfurt and Cologne. At the end of the 18th century, the castle was destroyed by the French and has been a ruin ever since. The imposing castle is one of the largest fortifications in Germany. From here you have a fantastic view over the Rhine-Main plain and the Taunus forests.

In the summer months, the castle is open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. From November to the end of March, the ruins are only open to visitors on Saturdays and Sundays. Admission is three euros. Every year around Ascension Day, a large knights' tournament takes place at the castle.

The map that you get at the entrance goes very well with the small bronze plaques on the parts of the building. This is a good way of orienting yourself. The keep is accessible and offers a wonderful view of the surroundings. Under the castle there are some freely accessible, but unlit cellars and corridors. A flashlight is worth it. It's worth it.

A beautiful castle ruin. You should have some change with you, we had to pay 3 euros per person and what we didn't know is that you can get a key for the tower at the cash desk

The castle was founded in the 12th century and has had an eventful history.
In 1796 it was blown up by the French and then served as a quarry.
The climb up the tower to the viewing platform is highly recommended.
The 3 euro entrance fee is worth it!

There are different ways to get to the castle. Across the city or from the train station, take the small path to the side of the castle ruins. The little path to the side is very nice but has lots of glass splinters, which doesn't make it so great for dogs. The ruin is a highlight for young and old.
